Craftsmen & Techniques The Nordlandsboat had three main building centres: Bindalen, Rana and Salten
Distinctive Features The characteristic acute 90 gr angle between the keel and the forstem, with the strongly curved sharestrake often painted in sharp colurs, made the nordlandsboat easy to recognize among the other traditional norwegian vessels. Most typically it was planked with 7 to 9 strakes and had 6 to 9 main frames. The larger boats built from 1860 onwards usually were equipped with a small cabin løfting aft.
Propulsion The Nordlandsfembøring where equipped with 3 to 6 pairs of oars and was most commonly rigged with a squaresail and a toppsail.

Purpose The Nordlandsfembøring was used for fishing and transport. It was the largest open boat under the annual cod fisheries in Lofoten and usually equipped with nets.
Type & Origin of Wood Locally sourced wood. Boats built north of Saltfjellet (Salten) had pine in keel, stem, planking, frames, gunwales and oars. The boats built south of Saltfjellet (Bindalen and Rana) were built in spruce. Riveted with iron.
