Craftsmen & Techniques Carvel built. Multiple vessels based on the same drawings. The first specialized rescue vessels of Norway were designed by the constructor Colin Archer in 1892. His rescue vessels were modified versions of his already renowned pilot vessels. Archer’s vessels were inspired by traditional eastern boat types, like the Hvaler-boat, as well as contemporary theories about hull and rig design. Archer’s designs became very popular, and in addition to the vessels built on his own boatyard in Larvik, his designs were copied or imitated by many other boatbuilders and shipwrights throughout the country. Therefore, one could talk about the Colin Archer type, regardless of who built the vessel.
