Distinctive Features
The river-boats of Sapmi are usually long, narrow and shallow constructions compared with the boats used on lakes and by the coast. This shape makes them ideal to maneuver in the currents of the river and passing shallow parts. Crew and passenger sit on the floorboards. When going downstream, one man rows forward, while the other member of the crew sits aft and steers with a short wide paddle. Against the current, the boats are usually punted.
Nowadays these types of boats often are built with a transom for an outboard motor.

Locally sourced wood, Pine in keel, planking, frames, gunwales and oars, birch in stem and keiper (oarlocks). Riveted with iron.
